There were people with notebooks — watching birds, sketching mechanisms, refusing to accept that the sky was reserved for other creatures. Leonardo drew the aerial screw four hundred and fifty years before Igor Sikorsky proved he was right. The Wright brothers stood on a beach in North Carolina in 1903 with an airplane that flew for twelve seconds — and rewrote what a wing could do.
