Before wind tunnels and TFR-controlled airshow lines, air racing was how the industry proved itself. Cleveland. Reno. The Bendix. The Thompson.

Every year the Golden Age racers got faster, meaner, and more beautiful — Travel Air Mystery Ships, Wedell-Williams, Laird Super Solutions — polished aluminum and painted steel, built for a single flight around a pylon course.

Half of them were death traps. All of them were rolling advertisements for what the manufacturer could build if you gave them money. The pilot who won on Sunday sold airplanes on Monday.
