Hangar Talk No. 01 — Basically VFR
Every VFR pilot has stood in front of a flight service briefing and said it. Every CFI has heard it come out of a student's mouth. Every accident investigator has read it in a preliminary report — usually in a witness statement from the last person who talked to the pilot on the ground.
"Basically VFR."
It's the phrase that turns a marginal weather day into a go-decision. It's the last rationalization before someone launches into conditions they shouldn't. It's the exact tone in which pilots have talked themselves into every VFR-into-IMC accident the NTSB has ever investigated.
Nobody's recommending it. But every pilot has said it at least once — usually on a Sunday afternoon, standing on the ramp, staring at a sectional and a METAR that disagree, and choosing to trust the sectional.
The Basically VFR tee prints an illustrated VFR sectional chart mostly obscured by convective activity — cumulonimbus cells, LOW IFR shading, lightning, precipitation — in warm rust ink on garment-dyed cotton. A single magenta course line cuts straight through the worst of it, terminating at a private strip on the far side of the storm. The joke is right there on the chart. You just have to be a pilot to read it.
Printed on Comfort Colors 1717 — 6.1 oz garment-dyed 100% ring-spun cotton. Unisex relaxed fit. Pre-shrunk. Softer with every wash.
Where it belongs: Every flight-service briefing you shouldn't have called for. Airport diners on marginal Sundays. The IMC club meeting where you finally got your instrument ticket.
