Three trips around the pattern. Three landings that are yours. Then the shirttail comes off with a pair of scissors and a Sharpie, and you go home with a certificate that says today is the day you became a pilot.

Every pilot remembers where they did it. What the wind was doing. Which runway they used. What the CFI wrote on the back of the shirttail. And every pilot has an opinion about whether the tradition of cutting the shirttail should have died out or not — but nobody's opinion has changed the tradition.
